After his parents divorced, James lived in several places as a youngster, including California, Texas, and Wyoming. Through high school, he worked on his father’s ranch, helping to raise livestock and maintaining the property. He enjoyed the work and spending time outdoors.
Jim was also on the high school wrestling team and, upon graduating, decided to serve his country by joining the United States Navy as a cryptologist for Naval Intelligence.
